27 die in hotel fire

NZPA-Reuter Vienna Twenty-seven people died yesterday in a dawn fire which spread swiftly through a second-class Vienna hotel crowded with foreign tourists. Officials said the dead appeared to be all mainly foreigners, but it was difficult to identify them because hotel registers had been destroyed. They said 34 American tourists from Bath. Maine, were staying at the fivestorey Am Augarten Hotel in a working-class section of Vienna. A Yugoslav tourist group was also at the hotel; first reports said 10 Yugoslavs had died. A City Hall spokesman said the death toll rose from 23 to 27 when four injured hotel guests died on their way to hospital. Five hours after the fire none of the victims had been identified. There were about 30 survivors.
