Electric car
Sir, — Thanks to Mr Ensor for bringing up the subject of electric car batteries and thanks to Mr Harman for his reply. I agree with Mr Ensor regarding the high cost of lead acid batteries and suggest that since there is already a world shortage, if we multiply this demand 20 times, imagine the cost increases to come. Further, supposing we use 240 volts, we would have 120 cells to service. Th' car battery is the most neglected item in our car; most people do not even service six cells adequately. Imagine taking your car in to have all these cells serviced, and imagine the cost. By placing a battery under frequent heavy and prolonged load, the electrolyte evaporates rather rapidly. These problems will be overcome no doubt, but it is my guess that it will not be before we are all taking ethanol as casually as we do petrol now. — Yours, etc., .1. J. RICHARDSON. August 27, 1979.
