Brilliant win at trials by Trusty Scot

Bv

PAUL MEIN

Trusty’ Scot soared into contention for Saturday night's A. E. Laing Free-for-all when he brilliantly won the main heat of the Addington trials yesterday.

In the wilderness since winning at Forbury Park last April, Trusty Scot looked well forward in his scorching five-length win over the dead-heaters, Gina Marie and Regal Belmont. Trusty Scot made his usual brilliant start and from then on made the race a procession. The Southland entire ripped into his work with vim, pacing the distance in 3min 24.35, the final 800 m in 602, the last quarter easing down in 29.85, the 1600 m in 2min 1.45.

Gina Marie, third mostly, and the trailing Regal Bel-

mont followed Trusty Scot home in a gap, with Wee Win fourth.

Wee Win received a drag up from mid-field when Main Star rushed around to sit in the open, but was hampered with 600 m to run when the Lauriston runner began to tire. He ran on usefully for fourth.

Stopwatch enhanced his prospects for success in the New Brighton Stakes when he led throughout to win the three-year-old heat. In the hands of Jim Curtin, Stopwatch began well and gave nothing else a chance.

easily beating Kaunda by a length and a half in 2min 42.45, the last 800 m in 61.25. Individualist led throughout his heat to score convincingly from Real Smooth and Sly Boy. The Nobletrained runner was going it well within himself, beating Real Smooth by three lengths in 3min 35.65.

Lee Mir looked well up to notching her fourth successive win with a courageous performance in her heat. The Gerry Mir mare rushed up from the near last with 1000 m to run, led 600 m out, and kept on strongly to beat Delpelo by half a length. Delpelo's strong late bid cut Flying Bay out of second by a nose with Coastalong, which trailed on the inner throughout, a useful fourth.

The Jones-trained Hands Down led for the last 1700 m to win his heat for maiden and Cl pacers. Hands Down kept Royal Scotch, in the open mostly, out comfortably by a length and a quarter in 3min 32.55, with Tuatahi Chief doing his Oxford Handicap chances no harm in third place. Ardross and Johnny Armstrong, two other Oxford Handicap candidates, also had winning turns. Ardross produced an impressive finishing dash in his heat. The Scottish Hanover gelding began quickly to lead, trailed Hal Cherie from the 2000 m, and ran out a convincing three-length victor in 3min 36.15.

Johnny Armstrong ran on best from a trailing position to beat Black Tempest by half a length in 3min 36.9 s in the other minor heat.

Reuben James Was also impressive in his heat. He rushed to the front early, trailed Tinker’s Gold from the 2000 m, got to the lead soon after the final turn and won convincingly by three lengths in 3min 31.65. Results:—
