Mayor’s claim criticised
A member of the Christchurch Drainage Board, Mr C. H. Russell, has criticised the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. G. Hay) for comparing Christchurch with London with regard to rubbish disposal.
At a board meeting Mr Russell noted that Mr Hay had been reported as saying he had changed his views on the metropolitan rubbishdisposal scheme after visiting London. He no longer believed three rubbish transfer stations were needed, and he thought people should not be allowed to take their own rubbish to tips or transfer stations.
“London is one of the dirtiest cities in the world,” he said. “The people who live there simply don’t care any more where they-throw their rubbish.”
