Mr Taylor feels that while the club entered its first totalisator season “blindly." it now has an idea of what to expect An operating budget for the forthcoming season has been prepared on the basis of last season's experience. “We are more aware of our race-day expenses," he said. “We cannot expect a meteoric increase in the turnover and with only oncourse betting we are at risk with the elements.” said Mr Taylor. "We are unable to rely on off-course betting to assist us. At present the New Zealand Greyhound i Racing Association’s board of control has submissions ! before the Racing Authority in its bid to introduce T.A.B. betting on the dogs by the 1980-81 season.
“However, with many newcomers still entering the sport and with the healthy turnover at most night meetings last season, the sport in Christchurch is making sound progress. The spadework had been done and wi must now consolidate,” he said.
An average crowd of about 1000 attended the 13 meetings last season and the turnover at each meeting was as follows:—
October 19 — $26,395: November 9 — $45,007; December 7 — $3X558; January 4 — $43,965: February 1 — $41,563; February 16 — $45,966: March 1 — $50,654) April 12 — $39,072; April 26 — $38,928; May 10 — $40,054; May 26 — $32,691f June 28 — $27,727.
