Sales tax on crafts

Sir, — Tn July this year we obtained a licence as wholesaler for the purpose of collecting sales tax, and made a precise return of our income for the month of June. In reply, we received a letter which not only appeared to question our integrity, but which also intruded into our basic right to live our lives free from bureaucratic interference. Since then we have discovered that thousands of craftspeople all over the country have not licensed, and it is obvious that the expense involved in having this thoroughly enforced will be far in excess of revenue collected. We believe that to continue collecting and paying sales tax on the articles we make is supporting very bad legislation and assisting in a general decline in our individual privacy. For these reasons, we have requested that our licence be revoked and suggest that other craftspeople take similar action. — Yours, etc., P. GIBBS AND J. WARREN, Brightwater. August 23, 1979.
