Police action at demonstrations

Sir, — The careful “balance” of your editorial (August 27) is upset by the final paragraph. No pictorial record, as you state, can show what did not happen, but the camera can lie if carefully selected episodes are cut from the complete record, in the same way as excised words can make a nonsense of the most reasoned speech which contains supporting argument. If filmed records of demonstrations are to be made it is essential that they be made by a third party and the results made available to all in a complete, unedited form. No copies should continue to exist after a specified period and the full cost of filming should be borne by the party requesting that a filmed or photographed record be made; all this without prejudice to the rights of the media, whose records should not be used for legal purposes. — Yours, etc., JACK CORNHILL. August 27, 1979.
