Jaks-H.S.O.B. runs away with match
Jaks-H.5.0.8. ran away with the opening game of the threematch final for the Guthrey Travel men ? s basketball championship when they effortlessly defeated Inns of the Pacific University, 92-60, at Cowles Stadium last evening. Few pundits would have predicted the one-sided nature of the contest, but Old Boys’ superior teamwork and greater accurac5 r allowed them to dominate the game t-rom the outset. After 15 minutes the score was 30-14 in Old Boys’ favour, and bv half-time they led, 42-24.
John Hill, in the absence of his club and New Zealand teammate, David Usmar, dominated the offensive rebounds, while John Whelon, Dennis Barry, and John Wright combined effectively to build a very healthy score. Extremely poor defence from University allowed Jaks to increase tneir half-time lead to 66-40 with 10 minutes of the match left. Hill and Barry led the scoring with 20 points apiece, while Whelan (12) and Wright (I’4) also made valuable contributions.
Max Herrlott was the only University player to shine on the night, and he scored 19 points. Abysmal shooting by the other members of the team did not give the aide a chance, and this department, will have to be improved if the student* are to challenge Old Boy* in the second game next Saturday. Checkers proved too strong for its arch-rival. Mairehau A, in the first match to decide the women’s championship.
Checkers won the opening match, 56-42, but rhe 14-point margin was a little flattering. Tight defence from both side* throughout forced many error* and the long outside shot was employed by the team*.. Better accuracy from Checkers, especially Robyn North and Sharon Rennell, who scored 1* points each, ensured vietory. Mairehau trailed, 19-24, at halftime and held Checkers for most of the second half, but wilted in the final three minutes. Better shooting from Mairehau will be needed if it is to atay in the hunt for the title.
