School plan accepted
The Ric carton Borough Council has accepted in principle plans outlining the proposed lay-out for the new Christchurch Girls’ High School at the old Fleming’s mill site in Deans Avenue. One provision attached to the council’s acceptance was that costs of realigning the road and associated services to the rear entrance to Mona Vale be borne by the Ministry of Works and Development, which also intends to reopen the old mill stream. Exact details of road alignment and other work are to be provided later when the matter will be referred to the council’s town-planning committee meeting. The committee, at the same time, will consider an application from the Railways Department seeking permission to build a new coal-fired boilerhouse at its Addington workshops. The council also decided, on a recommendation of its finance and by-laws commit-
i tee, to tell the Town Hall ■ Board of Management that - before the council decides r whether to help finance proi posed car-parking facilities at ; the hall the matter should be discussed more fully with the > council’s member on the 5 board. i A report suggesting a s rubbish-fire ban during the i winter when there is a risk Z of high air pollution was re- , ferred to other metropolitan i councils for their opinions. The council also directed its - works committee to investi- > gate placing one or more rei fuse bins in the council yard > during the winter for public ’ use on week-ends.
The appointment of a community-affairs officer was approved in principle, but deferred until other local authorties say whether they will share the expenses. The Town Clerk (Mr T. N. Neate) will report on the financial implications of the proposal. The council accepted the tender submitted by Road
Carpets, Ltd, for the resurfacing of Matipo Street, with the condition that the raising of manhole and service boxes be suspended until the effects of the resurfacing has been observed. The tender was for $36,503. Two other tenders of $36,864 and $37,991 were received.
A reminder that the festive season is not far off was reflected in the council’s noting that the Riccarton Business Association has agreed to pay $450 towards lighting' and pennants over the whole of the Riccarton Road area at Christmas.
