Official report, and prices

There was little change in the market, according to the official report yesterday on the Timaru wool sale, issued by the Woolbuyers’ Association, Woolbrokers’ Association, and the Wool Board.

Compared with the Invercargill sale on Friday crossbred fleece was irregular but generally unchanged. Crossbred skirtings, second-shear, and oddments were all firm, but crossbred crutchings were up to 2i per eent dearer.

Halfbred fleece was firm on rates paid at the Dunedin fine wool sale last week and skirtings were in sellers’ favour. The main competition came from the Middle East, Japan, and Eastern Europe, supported by Bradford and local mills. The offering was the largest for a Timaru August sale for more than 10 years. The catalogues comprised 15.043 bales of greasy wool and 38 bales of scoured wool, 184 bales being offered on behalf of the Wool Board.

The wool was principally drawn from South and MidCanterbury, and North Otago. It Included mainly pre-lamb shorn crossbred fleece, crutchings, and | oddments. It was made up of 0.5 per cent Merino, 13.14 per cent of Corriedale and halfbred, 34.54 per cent of crossbred. 6.18 per cent second-shear, 1.07 per cent lambs’ wool, 16J6 per cent crutchings, 14.5 per cent bellies, and 1341 per cent of oddments and miscellaneous wool. Reflecting the favourable winter the crossbred fleece was very well grown, sound, of good colOur, and high yielding—yields "and slight discoloration varied a "little from district to district. Generally clips were cleaner with little evidence of molt. A lighter weight of fine wools Was made up mainly of Corriedale and Halfbred clips. These were of good length, sound, good yielding and of fair colour, but some lines showed slight discoloration, a little dust, and appeared a little off-colour. The very few Merino lots offered included some attractive high yielding lines. ► Crutchings and oddments were Of fair to good length with some degree of discoloration, and some carried light mnd.
