Coober’s Queen wins first-up

PA New Plymouth Last season’s top juvenile, Coober’s Queen, resumed on a winning note in the Te Maunga Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double at the Taranaki Hunt Club’s meeting at Stratford yesterday. The filly worked to the front after about 250 m and under the light weight she had skipped clear on the home turn and held a rapidly decreasing margin to the post. Coober’s Queen was at good odds, many, including her connections, expecting her to find the ground too difficult. The favourite, Even Dollars, finished strongly for second ahead of Amigacho. Eloop, runner-up on Saturday, improved sufficiently to win the Newton King Handicap, first leg of the double. Eloop, a member of B. K. Hart’s Hawera stable was ridden by B. Hibberd in third place for much of the journey. The grey was switched out for a run at the top of the straight and he ran on best to beat another of the same colour, Willem Barendsz, by three lengths. Sencore and Indepth were close together for the other minor money. The weather was mainly fine but the track was extremely heavy.
