Fewer building permits
PA Wellington Permits to construct 1630 new houses and flats with a value of $45.1M were issued in March, 1979, a drop of 8.2 per cent in number over March, 1978, and an increase of 1.3 per cent in value. This brought the number of dwellings authorised for the year ended March, 1979, to 19,050 compared with 21,205 for the same period ended 1978 and 30,093 for 1977. (A preliminary figure issued on April 28, 1979, estimated that 1598 new
dwelling permits had been issued for March, 1979.) Of the 1630 units, 302 were authorised by the Government compared with 293 in March, 1978, said the Deputy Government Statistician (Mr J. Darwin). The value of new dwelling permits w T as $498.9M for the 12 months ended March, 1979, compared with $503.7M and $632.8M for the similar periods ending in 1978 and 1977, respectively. There were 1300 dwelling units started, 1500 completed, and 10 created by conversion during
March, 1979, compared with 1600 started, 1800 completed, and 30 created by conversion in March, 1978. For new buildings, other than houses and flats, permits valued at $31.8M were issued in March, 1979, compared with $51.4M in March, 1978. Permits for dwellings and Other buildings (including alterations and additions) issued for the month of March,, 1979, covered construction to the value of $105.2M compared with $124.5M in March, 1978.
