Stewart returns

Vance Stewart, the strapping Marist lock, will return to the Canterbury rugby team on Saturday for its national championship match against Manawatu at Lancaster Park. Stewart announced his retirement in May towards the end of the New Zealand Maoris overseas tour, but appeared for Canterbury against Queensland on June 9. Several factors have since influenced him to become • available again, and his appearance on Saturday will be his second for Canterbury this season. Stewart’s return will be most welcome as there is some doubt surrounding Graeme Higginson, whose outstanding display against Auckland last Saturday won him the “Player of the Day” award. Not surprisingly, the Canterbury selectors have made no other changes to the team which played so capably to beat Auckland. The team is:— Richard Wilson; Randal Scott, Shane Gibbons, lan Mather; Keiran Keane, Wayne Smith; Steve Scott; Alex Wyllie (captain); Barney Henderson, Stewart, Higginson or Johns, Den Hayes; Barry Thompson, Murray Hall, John Ashworth. . Reserves: Graeme Ellis, Dave Ngatai, John Collinson, Murray McEwan; Bill Bush, John Phillips, Dave Thompson. The Canterbury B team to play Buller at Westport on Saturday is: Brian McLean; Garry Hooper, Steve Hansen, Geoff Brain; Simon Brown, Robbie Deans, Phil Thomas; Murray Straight; Jock Hobbs, Alan Martin, John Harwood (captain), Peter McLaren; Pat O’Byrne, Geoff Henderson, Murray Davie. Reserves: Ross Gihson, Grant Shapland; Mike Durning, Don Cameron.
