Veteran Kauere Lad wins main event at Tauranga

Tauranga Kauere Lad produced a strong final run to eclipse the leaders in the last 50m iof the $5OOO City of Tauiranga Handicap yesterday, i The 2100 m event was the (first leg of the T.A.B. double :at the. Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s Tauranga meeting, I For much of the running ! Kauere Lad’s jockey, Toby (Autridge, had been content to keep in the rear of the field, in fact at the' 800 m mark he was last. He eased the horse through the field to the turn and made ground quickly over the final stages to win by a long neck from Stylish Sovereign, which had been handy throughout. Mighty Wealthy, the outsider of the 10-horse field, was two lengths and a half away third. Heads were all that separated the next three

[horses, Lark, Beau Henry land the favourite, Kahawai, I Kahawai got a good start and although handy throughout, could pot match the others at the finish. The second leg of the double, the Festival Handicap, finished sensationally when J. D. Hayes came off his mount, Silver March, when leading Tight On the line. The race was. awarded to the second horse, Tamashenille when the judges’ photo revealed Hayes fell just short of the post. Tamashenille, the rank outsider of the field, was at odds of nearly 70 to one. An eight-year-ertd mare, Tamashenille was in the bunch for much of the race, but came on well over the finishing stages.
