Goats save filly

In England, two pedigree goats have saved the fife of a fortnight-old filly whose mother died just after giving birth. At first, attempts were made to feed the foal with cow’s milk, and, although she took about 11 litres in the first day, she was visibly losing weight. The owners, after someone suggested goat’s milk, had great difficulty in tracking down two highyield milking goats. However, two were finally purchased and the foal accepted their milk straudit away. Knowing it wouid be better if they could get the foal to suckle, the owners put honey on their teats and within three to four hours the foal was taking milk straight from the goats. This feat amazed the local veterinary surgeons. The goats took turns to suckle their adopted offspring every two hours. With the foal demanding seven litres daily, the nannies’ normal feed was stepped up to almost twice the usual daily intake.
