Benefits group formed
Christchurch organisations for people on benefits may form a federation. The Concerned Beneficiaries Group has decided to form a committee to study the idea. About 150 persons attended the meeting which was called to protest against what they see as benefit cut backs in the recent Budget. Seven speakers including the secretary of the Trades Council (Mr W, Cameron) spoke to the meeting on the latest provisions for beneficiaries. Three Labour Members of Parliament, Mr M. Connelly (Yaldhurst), Mr M. Moore (Papanui) and Mrs A. Hercus (Lyttelton) were in the audience. • The Concerned Beneficiaries Group hopes to organise a federation into an effective pressure group representing the needs of ail people receiving benefits. A petition has also been drafted asking the Government to review measures in the Budget. “If we do not stand up for our own rights we cannot expect anyone else to consider us,” said Mrs Lana Le Quesne, a spokeswoman for the group.
