“Political pressure and television”
Sir, — The basic error in the reasoning behind “The Press” editorial of August 18 seems to be the fallacy that, as the broadcast news media are publicly owned, a different set of standards should apply to them from those that apply to the print news media. If, to the recommendation of that toothless watch-dog, the TVI programme advisory committee, - that “the Prime Minister should have access as of right to broadcasting,” were to be added the words, “and newspapers,” there is no doubt what the reactions of the newspaper proprietors would be. The newspapers 4
should be the allies of the broadcasters in their efforts to resist, despite the corporation chairman’s capitulation, this latest attempt of the Government to control the dissemination of news. — Yours, etc., JOHN BALNEAVES. August 19, 1979.
