Tree giving plan
A public tree-donation scheme was approved in principle by the Christchurch City Council last evening. ,The scheme, suggested by the parks and recreation committee, would encourage a $5O donation for each tree planted in a City Council area, according to an approved plan. Trees could be planted as memorials to individuals or could be given by groups. Certificates would be presented to the donors. The council also approved the removal of some small cedar and fir trees from the Hagley golf course, where they were planted during the 1960 s to define fairways and beautify the area in North Hagley Park. Some of the evergreens have not grown well and have been criticised for detracting from the park’s open character. Trees to be removed will be marked so that councillors and the public can identify them.
