Bush-control question
The Christchurch City Council will ask the Waimairi County Council how willing it would be to take over administration of the historic Riccarton Bush. Cr D. C. Close said at the City Council’s meeting last evening that it could be a way to cut down on the number o* local bodies. The bush is overseen by the Riccarton Bush Trust. His amendment — to an | original motion which would! have called for a new funding formula through special'
legislation—was carried on a 13-7 vote. Cr P. J. R. Skellerup led opposition to the move. Since the reserve was the last original swamp bush remnant in Canterbury, it should be entrusted to specialist care. It would be “a grievous mistake” to hand the bush' over to a county with a rela- i tively small reserves section,! he said. | j Proposed legislation would j ensure adequate flnafrpe for; ■the bush by allowing local| ; authorities to increase their 'maximum levies.
