Equestrian plan for disabled

A $lOO,OOO indoor equestrian arena is planned by the Christchurch branch of Riding for the Disabled. The arena, which is expected to be completed by next winter, will be built on land made available on the Yaldhurst side of Riccarton Racecourse by the Christchurch Racecourse Trustees.

The arena will ultimately be used as an equestrian centre for Canterbury that will include indoor showjumping and dressage facilities.

Once lease agreements have been completed, the Christchurch organisation will embark on a big fundraising campaign. The president of the Christchurch branch of Riding for the Disabled (Mr R.

J. Mill) said the branch already had $lO,OOO. Voluntary labour and free materials for much of the construction work would help to keep costs down. There are three Riding for the Disabled groups in Christchurch catering for about 100 riders. Mr Mills said this was only scratching the surface. More manpower and resources would bring horse riding to a greater number of disabled children and adults. Riders now meet fortnightly but were forced to break off for three months during the winter. When the arena was completed children and adults would be able to ride every day throughout the year.
