Tennis legends never die, or even fade away
NZPA St Louis Roy Emerson defeated Rod Laver, 6-4, 6-3 to win the $6OOO tennis legends championship yesterday at the Dwight Davis tennis centre. Emerson’s victory in the all-Australian final also brought him 40 points in the tennis legends standings, for a tour lead tie with Ken Rosewall. Each has 130 points. Laver, the tournament top seed, earned $4OOO. The contest was played in 39 deg heat, but the oppres-
sive temperatures and humidity did not diminish the level of play, as Emerson said he felt he played his best match of the fourday tournament. “I was pleased with my hitting. My volleying was as strong as its been in a long time,” he said. “I was trying to keep the rally short because of the heat, and I was fortunate to be able to get to the net against Laver. He usually keeps me away with his passing shots, but today I kept him pinned to the baseline.”
