Ultimate’s late run successful in Oamaru feature
Special correspondent Dunedin Ultimate broke through for a deserved win when he got up in the last stride in the Fairfield Handicap at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday. Ultimate, which will race next at Ashburton, had been placed in four of his six previous starts from Maurice Jones’s Washdyke stable [after starting a fresh campaign in May. ] A six-year-old by Final (Orders from Nimbus Queen, (Ultimate is raced by Messrs (Fred Ng and Doug Sanderson, of Timaru. He was previously trained by Bill Turner. Ultimate was three wide in the second line and just got the better of Hasuka, which had disputed the pace with Padlock and Myownie (three wide). Young Kelly was half a length back, third, after improving from the rear at the 700 m and there was a neck to Myownie. Sir James, the favourite trailed in the second line on outer but did not clear until the race was virtually over. His Advice completed the T.A.B. double when he outsped his rivals in the Ribble Handicap. Mull of Kintyre led the chase after His Advice and was in a gap of three lengths and a half at the finish.
Deep South improved a sound record as a jumper when he led throughout the J. M. Shaw Memorial Steeplechase. Bought at the Chelandry Stud dispersal sale last January for $l5OO, Deep South has now won three rapes and gained two seconds as a steeplechaser. He is raced by John and Hazel Mcßae, of Nightcaps, and trained by their son, Gareth, at Riverton.
Deep South was ridden by the Takanini apprentice, Wayne Hillis, who will return north today to ride Otara Jack at Stratford tomorrow. Hillis is not sure if he will be back to ride Deep South at Gore on Saturday. Deep South won by five lengths from Finalea, which
was handy all the way. Charlar was two lengths back third after being “anchored” in the going. He shaded Aarvak, whose rider, Nick Harnett, was subsequently fined $lOO for failing to ride his mount out. Taitan was pulled up after the fifth. fence. His rider, Paul Dooney, had a terrifying moment when he was bumped from the saddle at the second fence. He was
forced to run with one leg alongside Taitan when his other foot became entangled ; in the breastplate. Dooney regained the saddle but Taitan dropped further behind with two slow jumps and he was eased up. Bymai, which easily won the Spring Hurdles, will revert to flat racing at Gore on Saturday. Bymai, which has won his '■ last two starts over hurdles,
trailed the leaders. Red Ro and Ebony Prince, and went to the front at the second last fence. Ebony Prince fell at the fence by the 1000 m and his rider, Stephen Dalton, broke his collar bone. Frontiniac, a S6OOO purchase at the Waikato “ready to run” sale last October, gained a dashing win in the third maiden at Oamaru yesterday.
