Parking fees increased
The Christchurch City Council will increase fees in its parking buildings and off-street car parks for the first time in more than four years. Part of the increase, from September 1 for casual parkers and from September 29 for motorists with reserved spaces, will be used to help pay for new off-street car parking for the new public library. For casual parking the fee will rise from 10c to 15c an hour. The fee for reserved parking in the uncovered part of the Manchester Street parking building will not be increased. The fee for uncovered
reserved parking will rise from $4 to $5 a week at the Oxford Terrace and Lichfield Street buildings. The fee for covered parking will rise from $5 to $8 a week in these two buildings. and from $5 to $7 a week in the Manchester Street building. A report on parking meter charges will be made by October. Cr Vicki Buck said at the council’s meeting last evening that, those charges should also rise soon. Cr P. N. G. Blaxall said higher on-street charges could “drive people away” from the city centre. He would rather see the metres removed altogether.
