This experimental car is a prototype developed at four universities in the Federal Republic of Germany, with backing from motor manufacturers. It is specially designed to combine safety, speed, and economy. It will be a four-door, four-seater, front-wheel-drive car weighing about 1200 kg (26401 b Wheelbase will be 2.75 m (9ft), over-all length 3.60 m (lift lOin). The emphasis is on aerodynamics. Even the wing mirrors
are incorporated in a car body designed without sharp corners (for the sake of cyclists and pedestrians in a crash). Sheet metal designed to crush on impact will be clad in plastic, partly to absorb noise. Its 2.5-litre afterburn diesel engine wiH be.capable of at least 140 km/h (88 m.p.h.), yet use only 6.7 litres per 100 km, or about 42 miles per gallon.
