Consideration for cyclists
Sir, — Your correspondent Mrs McGill (August 10) is concerned about the disregard shown by drivers towards cyclists. Having just spent a week in Christchurch after an absence of many years, I was appalled to see the behaviour of most cyclists on the roads. Red traffic lights and stop signs appear to mean nothing to the average cyclist, not to mention the rules regarding bicycle lights. It was somewhat unusual to pass a cycle at night which had adequate lighting. No doubt there is a case to be made for motorists considering cyclists, but it is my opinion that cyclists certainly need to consider other road users., Perhaps the answer would be registration plates for cycles so that misdemeanours could be easily reported to the Traffic Authority. — Yours, etc., RONALD GLENNIE, Auckland. August 16, 1979.
