Yelling militants smash protest

NZPA-Reuter Teheran Hundreds of youths armed with clubs, knives, and knuckle-dusters and shouting “death to communism” have broken up a march for press freedom in Teheran. The youths, many of them waving’ pictures of Ayatollah RUho'llah Khomeiny, waded into 3000 demonstrators protesting against the banning : on Tuesday of Iran’s leading . independent daily, “Ayandegan.” Shouting, “Ruhollah will crush the plots of both the Left and the Right,” they tore down banners and beat up many of the marchers, including several women. The attack was the climax of a day of harrassment in which ’groups of Islamic militants repeatedly taunted

various groups of *‘Ayandegan” supporters. Revolutionary guardsmen fired into the air earlier to break up clashes between the two groups in front f Teheran University. Demonstrators from both sides were reported to have been arrested.

The N.D.F.’s ,last rally, in June, was broken up violently by Right-wing Islamic militants.

The banning of “Ayandegan,” along with an order closing the satirical weekly, “Ahangar,” and a decision by the Leftist daily, “Peygham-Emruz,” to stop publishing for security reasons, has deeply worried intellectuals who ’ six months ago supported so enthusiastically the overthrow- of the Shah.
