Maori girls to be presented

The Waitaha Cultural Committee will hold a debutantes’ ball in the Town Hall on August 18, the first held for Maori girls in Christchurch for 20 years.

Fifteen girls will be presented to the president of the committee (Mr T. Manihera) and his wife. Local young people were keen on doing something different, as against discos, and the idea of a “coming out” ball had been revived, said one of the organisers, Mrs Ramari Brennan.

Among the official guests will be the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Couch) and the member of Parliament for Southern Maori (Mrs Whetu Tirakatene-Sul-livan). More than 300 people are expected to attend.
