Able Gold picked in Kurow Cup

By

G. K. YULE

Able Gold, one of the more exciting pacing prospects in Canterbury, looks set to carry on on his winning way in the Kurow Cup at Oamaru on Monday. He is the only last-start winner in a capacity field for the 2600 m event. Able Gold showed his fitness for this test when he won over 2600 m in 3min 35.8 s at Addington Raceway on Wednesday, pacing his last 800 m in about imin 2s, probably the fastest of any horse on the day. Most of the horses he beat were more loosely assessed, but he beat them handsomely after being one of the slowest beginners. Able Gold seems to be at his best on firm footing, but he is pacing much more evenly now and no matter what conditions prevail he should acquit himself well. Kheredin has compiled a sound record in the last 12 months and from his handy barrier draw he could press Able Gold hard, especially as he is usually a reliable beginner. He has drawn No. 6 at the barrier and should be capable of taking up a handy position and maintaining it throughout. Nugget was an impressive winner on an easy track at Ashburton on June 2, and two days later he was run-ner-up to Don Cortes over 2400 m. Seventh was the best he could manage on a firm track at Addington on July 21, after a win at Blenheim at his previous start. Nugget looked well when paraded at the Addington trials on Wednesday and his prospects must be highly rated.

Castle Derg, Our Location and Winfield Lord will be other prospects among a fairly even remainder, while a bold run from Butler Brigade and Real Lumber will not surprise. Real Lumber is a recent addition to Trevor Thomas’s team at Belfast. Rocketing Star, Johnny Land and Paleface Lad form a likely trio in the second leg. the Don Memorial Handicap, a race in which the chances of Redoak, Sidi Rezegh and Cheeky Wave must be considered.
