Abbotsford disaster

Sir, — Your item (August 9) “Abbotsford’s shaky geology known in 1962” is out of date. Legget’s “Geology and Engineering” has been a text used by the University of Canterbury for many years. My copy is dated 1939 and used in post-war studies. However, this edition does not mention Abbotsford. In 1946 I was a student in geology at Otago University under the late Professor W. N. Benson and recollect a field trip made to the Abbotsford area. It was in this year that Professor Benson published his paper, “Landslides and Allied Features in the Dunedin District” in relation to geological structure, topography and engineering, and to quote from this paper: “The Abbotsford mudstone _is more prone to slide than almost any other formation in the Dunedin district.” The instability of this area has been known for over 40 years. The taxpayer should not be asked to pick up the tabs for what is the responsibility of those who permitted the development. — Yours, etc., N. S. SUTHERLAND. August 9, 1979.
