Govt’s principles criticised

PA Wellington The National Party talking about principles resembled an old harlot talking about virginity — “She had it once, but can’t remember when,” said the Labour member of Parliament for Papanui (Mr M. K. Moore) in Parliament this week. Mr Moore criticised the Government’s record in regional development, with spec, ific reference to the South Island. Christchurch consumers, he said, paid more for electricity than Aucklanders. Electricity was produced in the South Island, was “zipped” through the cold, snowy conditions of Christchurch and up the North Island to Tamaki, where it was sold at a cheaper rate. “I don’t see why the people in Christchurch should pay more than the people in Tamaki,” Mr Moore said.

Maui gas had been described as a national asset and a boost to industry, but “it could well be the biggest blow ever to industry in rhe South Island,” he said, because it cost South Island industries more than their North Island counterparts.
