Toko 1 oil strike?
PA Wellington Rumours of an oil strike at the Toko 1 well near Stratford were fanned yesterday afternoon when the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) visited the Petrocorp rig for the first time. . , But last night Mr Birch shrugged off a suggestion that light crude oil might be present. “If it is, they found it after I left,” he said. The well was now down to 4500 m, only 500 m from its maximum depth. The ground formation was similar to that at Kapuni and if hydrocarbons were present they could be expected in the next 500 m. Drilling to the well’s maxi» mum depth could take up to a month. Mr Birch said he had deliberately delayed his first
visit to the well since his appointment as Minister so that —he could see the work when it was well advanced.
