This excellent little restaurant is upstairs above the Hereford Street entrance — easy to locate, and very central If you are meeting friends. I like their soup, or perhaps quiche and a salad (and I never resist the gateaux), but you could have a substantial meal If you wish. A Navarin of iamb or a very Interesting chicken dish (I heard loud murmurs of appreciation) were on the menu when I was there. The menu changes each week though. You know of course, that BROOKES are open in the evenings from 6.30 p.m. for dinner — bookings o good Idea. The licence Is BYO at BROOKtS, the atmosphere warm and friendly, the food great. They grow them In enormous' quantities, supply the rest of Now Zealand (bulk orders easily filled), and export them. The carnations In their shop are so fresh (picked early each morning) they are sometimes mistaken for half-dead ones. By me, I regret to say. I now know that what I previously thought was a squashed middle. Is actually a crumpled crown — and the flower Is so fresh It hasn’t oven opened completely! And now you know too — so thanks SHADtS fLORISTI Of course, there are other flowers to buy os well. You won't have to take your shoes off, or go through a tea ceremony, but the feel of ancient cultures, a reverence for beauty is noticeable. Soft pink, celedon green, and washes of blue in glazed fabric suitable for quilting (or plain if you wish), furniture in cedar and rimu with -rattan, prints and wail-hangings from China and Japan, some clever five-sidad paving tiles, and an Incredible, almost indescribable, Japanese masterpiece. Yards of dark blue, with rod insignia and a mass of gold bullion. The mood is Oriental. The look is individual. GEORGE CHIMIRRI INTERIORS, Upper level. Phone 791-G9*. 1 MEN’S CLOTHING p[ This really is a unique shop. The designer/owner Les Sherlock has a simple philosophy. He does not like clothes that have a mass produced look; ho does like the “one of" look that is so much a part of the scene in the sophisticated capitals of the world. And although he may make up a favourite design 10 times, each piece Is Individual. The clothes are off-the-peg, because the shop In The Shades is a logical extension of Borries — Men’s Tailors in Chancery Lane. Any ideas you may have that Christchurch is behind tn fashions for men are dispelled when you shop at BORRIES — MEN’S CLOTHING on the Upper Level, The Shades. All the clothes are special — and to my eye,the shirts, both silk and challis, and the casual jackets in soft leather are superb. The shop tn The Shades has a good selection of cake decorations. These are different, and cover every possible cake-decorating occasion. Of course, children and sweets go together, and If you are looking for a “special little something'* the chocolate animals, (frogs, sheep, ducks etc.) or chocolate alphabet letters would bo ideal. I hove seen these used on birthday cakes —- with enormous success. The big problem as always, in MARY GRAY is deciding. One day I am going to go mad and buy 100 grams of everything. But for now I dither between acid drops (they remind me of childhood days) or creamy creamy fudge. Then , .there ere the boxed of confectionary ...
