Museum may raise levy

The Canterbury Museum Trust Board does not need the permission of local bodies to change the act which controls the amount of money it can levy contributing organisations. This information was contained in a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs, read at the board’s monthly meeting yesterday.

The letter included a note of warning that, in view of the “division” caused by the Auckland Museum’s recently raised levies, the Canterbury Museum Board would have to be prepared to justify its case to Parliament if “unanimity” was not reached with the local bodies.

The chairman of the board (Mr P. J. R. Skellerup) said that any amending legislation would not be able to come before Parliament this session. He hoped it could come forward at the begin, ning of next year’s session. Earlier in the meeting, a letter from the Waimairi County Council was read. 1{ said that the council felt the board should consider other means of finance apart from increasing the levy on local councils.

The council said it was opposed to any more ex. gratia payments to the board unless other sources of fin. ance were found.
