Offal-pit death
A Waiuku builder died after he fell into a 4.smdeep offal pit, the Auckland Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland) has found. He found that David James Smith, aged 31, died on May 5 when he fell into the pit on his small farm. Scientists had given evidence that there had been a “dangerous deficiency” of oxygen in the pit at the time.
The court was told that Mr Smith had tried to lower himself into the pit by rope to retrieve something when he had fallen.
