Wellknown pianist dead

A well known New Zealand pianist and entertainer, Mr John William Henry (Jack) Thompson has died in Christchurch. He was 72. Since the 19205, Mr Thompson had appeared in nightclubs and cabarets throughout New Zealand. Mr Thompson was bom in Gore and educated at Invercargill. He started his musical career there with piano tuition at the Charles Gray School of Music.

He later moved to Wellington to take up cabaret work and during World War II played in the troopship Awatea. Mr Thompson appeared in many television programmes, including a popular early series, “Song of Twilight,” and the “Max Cryer Show.” He also toured with the “Miss New Zealand” show. He played at the Russley Hotel in Christchurch, from 1970 until 1977, when poor health forced him to retire. Mr Thompson was the youngest of a family of eight. Of his seven sisters, only two survive — Mrs Phyllis Bruce, of Dunedin, and Miss Gladys Thompson, of Christchurch. He is also survived by his daughter, Mrs Deidre Catley, of Auckland.
