Lawyer faces more charges
An unemployed Christchurch' solicitor, Robert Frederick Arthur Powell, entered no plea to four additional charges of failing to account, involving $50,800,
when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Powell, aged 38, was remanded on bail of $5OOO to August 2. When Powell appeared in court two weeks ago charged with the theft of $14,000 by failing to account, his name was sup* pressed by Mr J. S. Bisphan, S.M. ~ However, when continuation of this order was sought yesterday* Mr N. L.
Bradford, S.M., said he was not prepared to allow this. In the four new charges, Powell is alleged ,to have received various sums of money, ranging from $2OOO
to $22,500 on the condition that they be paid to various persons and firms. Those named were the Housing Corporation, the Allied Mortgage Company, Vaughan Frederick Harris, Phyllis Chawner Harris, and James Duncan McPherson. The Magistrate was told by counsel (Mr P. J* Cordner) that there was a possibility that some of the charges Powell faced would be defended*
