Doubles for five skaters

The five skaters who w.on the various aggregates at the Canterbury long-track ice skating championships earlier this month succeeded again in the provincial short-track titles at Lake Ida. Mark Atkinson (senior men), Gary Wilson (intermediate men), Jon Havenaar (junior men). Ans Kremer (senior women), and Jay Hunt (junior women) ail completed notable doubles, although Havenaar and Hunt were unopposed in the. junior grades. Atkinson dominated the senior racing. He was beaten by both Dean Cade and Bob Montgomery at the longtrack championships, but was untroubled on Saturday to win the four races and the aggregate for the third successive year. Cade was again Atkinson’s main rival, but he did not extend him as much as expected and, in fact, was hardpressed to hoid second in three of the races from a determined Mike Day, who skated much better than he had in the long-track events.

Miss Kremer (Westland) defended her women’s title against her New Zealand team-mate, Debbie Cade. Miss Cade was expected to beat Miss Kremer over the 200 m. but the strong Westland skater won that race by 0.04 s and was untrouoled over the longer distances. Wilson, a Highly promising junior, emulated her performance at the long-track championships by winning all four events. Wilson was only (a reserve for the test team jagainsr Australia, but was only half a second slower than Atkinson’s winning time over 1000 m. The competitors had a tiring day because the championships were completed in one day. It was just as well, because heavy snow on Sunday closed the lake. Results:— Senior men 500m.—31.
