'Sports policy consistent’

PA Wellington The policy of the Sports Foundation on contacts with South Africa is “consistent” with the Government’s support of the Gleneagles Agreement, says the Minister of Sport and Recreation (Mr Highet). The foundation’s policy, which had regard to the Government policy of discouraging sports contact with South Africa, was that it would decline aid in cases involving competition or training within South Africa, Mr Highet said. It would apply its normal grants criteria for international competition in third countries where South African participation might be incidental. He was answering a question by Mr F. D. O’Flynn (Labour, Island Bay) who wanted Mr Highet to assure Parliament that Government funding of the Sports Foundation would be made only on the condition that no grant be given to sports bodies or players who breached the Gleneagles Agreement. The Sports Foundation, which has received some grants from the Government, is a private organisation which gives financial aid to New Zealand sportsmen and women competing in international events overseas.
