Legal aid defended

PA Wellington A suggestion that people granted criminal legal aid should contribute to the cost of their defence in court has been criticised by the Opposition spokesman on justice. Mr R. W. Prebble. In Parliament last week the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay) said a charge of $2O to $3O would not be unreasonable. Mr Prebble said that legal aid costs were rising no faster than inflation. The Minister sould concentrate on providing speedy, efficient justice and forget about attacking the pockets of those least able to pay. "It is the Government's duty to provide all citizens with access to our courts," Mr Prebble said.
