Regional petrol tax ‘unlikely’
PA Wellington A regional petrol tax to help the Auckland Regional Authority to cover the costs of its bus services would be unlikely to get Government approval, said the Minister of Local Government (Mr Highet) last evening. Mr Highet was commenting on a report that Aucklanders faced moves to introduce an extra 10c a gallon regional petrol tax, the money to go to the A.R.A.’s bus accounts. The Deputy Mayor of Auckland and an authority member, Mr J. Firth, said
the tax would give the authority $l3 million a year and reduce local-body levies by a half. " But Mr Highet said any such move would require Government approval through legislation passed in Parliament. Government approval was “unlikely,” he said. But. the Government would consider any proposition put to it to help the A.R.A. and its costs. He had many discussions with A.R.A. members on finances, said Mr Highet, but the idea of a regional petrol tax had not been discussed.
