Des Turner out of rep. golf
Canterbury’s top amateuar golfer at last year’s national inter-provincial Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament, Des Turner, will not be available for his province this season. Although Turner did not have the best of records at the Freyberg tournament — one win, a half and five losses, he was surprisingly thrust into the No. 1 position and met some formidable opponents, many of them New Zealand representatives. The former Australian, who also played for Canterbury in the Freyberg event in 1973 and 1974 (winning nine of his 14 matches) said that work and family com-
■ mitments influenced his decision. He is undecided whether he will continue to play for : the unbeaten Christchurch Woodward Cup team in the ; inter-club competition. Turner’s early form this ■ season indicated that the 1973 Canterbury stroke and match-play champion would have held his Freyberg place. He was beaten by Geoff Saunders, the eventual winner, in an ' excellent semifinal to the provincial match-plav championship in April and had scored two wins and a half from his three Woodward Cup appearances.
