Coaching tasks
Bruce Brownlee is one of the three top-ranked squash professionals who will be assisting in the preparation of their country’s teams for the world amateur championships at Brisbane this October. Brownlee will work with the six-man New
Zealand side from August 20 until mid-September while Geoff Hunt, the world champion, has agreed to coach the Australian team and Jonah Barrington, six times British Open champion, is coaching Britain. According to the New
Zealand team trainer, Mr Rob Crothall, Brownlee will play against individual members in tournaments as well as training the team. Mr Crothail said that the team will practice with bouncy white dot balls to simulate the conditions expected to be encountered in Brisbane. A number of the official Stellar balls have been sent out from Australia for the players to get used to. Barrington is optimistic about Britain’s chances in the teams event even though three leading players — Gawain Briars, lan Robinson and John Le Lievre — have all turned professional. The Irish left-hander is also trying to simulate Australian conditions in England; he has requested detailed information on such things as humidity, court lighting and court temperatures expected in October.
