Youth stabs himself to death

PA Wellington A youth died after stabbing himself in front of four policemen at an Upper Hutt tavern early this evening. Sergeant R. J. Renshaw, who was at the tavern, said the police were trying to remove two youths who were arguing on the inside stairway. One, aged 19, pulled out a small, sharp knife and said he would stab himself if the police came closer.

As the police hung back trying to calm the youth, he stabbed himself in the heart.

“It happened too quickly for us to be able to do anything,” said Sergeant Renshaw.

The police had already arrested the second man. He will be charged with disorderly behaviour. The youth died while ambulance officers were attending him in the hotel. He had been depressed after a domestic argument and was not a regular customer of the hotel, The police were called to the Provincial Tavern about 5.30 p.m. by the management.

The name of the dead youth has not yet been released.
