University in fine basketball form

University continued on its winning way at Cowles Stadium last evening when another round of the senior women’s basketball competition was played. Continental Caterers Rangiora was the luckless victim this time, crashing to defeat at the hands of the more experienced University side. University won in a canter, 68-26.

Adrienne Beukenholdt, the Canterbun junior and senior representative, was in fine form and notched 22 points for University. She was ably assisted by her sister Tina, who stole ban and created gaps in a game almost devoid of interest.

Rangiora was slow to bring the ball up the court and when it did have possession it was lost by sloppy passing and poor finishing, Brenda Fortune worked hard for Rangiora for little reward. and Kongo King, normally the country team’s star, was well bottled up by University.

Denise Mackav (11) and Denise Atkins (10) were the other University players to do well, while Caroline Wintar notched 16 for Raffgiara. Victories even more comfortable than that of University were

secured in the late game* by Mairehau A and Mairehau High School, over Christchurch United and Rebels, respectively. Mairehau A went on a scoring spree to post the highest total of the season and whip United 118-25, while the High School side tropnced Rebels, United’s was a very lethargic effort, although the bench was limited to only six playem. They allowed Mairehau the luxury of four forwards to two guards on many occasions and the faaa break was used to good effect Mary F’astler rebounded well to pick up 20 points, and Caroline Perry celebrated her selection in the Canterbury junior team to notch 22. Patsy Barry scored 20.

Good team work by Mairehau High School made short work of Rebels, which picked up slightly m the second spell Bronwyn Palmer scored freely with some good outside shots and picked up 28 points, and Megan Stokes and Isobel Lee made fine contributions. too. For Rebels. Avdril Robinson and Chris Chapman each notched 10. In a deferred men’s second division game. Checkers B defeated Wigram. 89-51.
