Haynes at full-back for North Auckland

David Haynes, who is best known as a wing, where he has represented New Zealand Juniors and New Zealand Maoris, will switch to full-back for North Auckland in its national championship match against Canterbury at Lancaster Park tomorrow. North Auckland has lost its top full-back, Mike Gunson, to the New Zealand Juniors.

The Ranfurly Shield holder will be attempting to complete a difficult treble tomorrow —• touring wings over Southland, Otago and Canterbury. It is a chall nge that has proved beyond some of the best North Island sides, and international ones as well. North Auckland beat

Otago, 16-7, last Wednesday and Southland, 15-0, on Saturday. In addition to Gunson, North Auckland has also lost its top wing, Fred Woodman, to the Juniors and another recent blow was the transfer of its shieldwinning hero of last year, Chippie Semenoff, to Brisbane. However, the side chosen for tomorrow is still a strong one. The backline includes two All Blacks, Joe Morgan and Eddie Denn, while the half-back, Steve Griffin, is a talented footballer. Hamish Macdonald, is not on the tour, although he could be available for the shield challenges. Mike Burgoyne, the very successful captain of the New Zealand Maoris on their unbeaten Australian and Pacific tour earlier this winter, Tuck Waaka and Graeme Phillips are other members of a pack that should give Canterbury a stiff test.
