Trawling plan with Russians

Wellington reporter Permission has been granted for an experimental deep-water trawling proI gramme off the New Zealland coast in November. Russia has applied to do ■ experimental fishing at depths of more than 600 metres using a mesh size of 115. mm and larger. New Zealand observers will be accommodated aboard the Russian vessels during the programme, which will continue until March next year. Three trawlers with the capacity to fish at extreme depths will be used. The programme is expected to furnish information about such deep-water species as oreo dory and orange roughy. Fees will be paid on the catch taken and also any fish carrier charges when the catch is transhipped. Only 5 per cent of the total catch may be other than the two main target species.
