Study of airport at Wellington
PA Wellington A team of consultants has been appointed to carry out an economic study which will finally decide the future of Wellington Airport as an international terminal, the acting chairman of the airport committee of the Wellington City Council (Mr J. Wootton) has said. The team would consider several options regarding the trans-Tasman link, including an option to extend the runway by 220 metres to take such aircraft as DC 10s.
It will also consider the effects of terminating passenger and freight flights between Wellington and Australia. The team will 1c k at the technical attributes of various aircraft, traffic forecasts, and the additional costs involved should it be necessary to transfer passengers and freight to Auckland or Christchurch to reach an overseas destination. The study, which will cost $50,000, will take 12 weeks to compile.
