New drink is non-alcoholic

Groceries

Claytons is “the drink to have when you don’t want a drink.” The latest release on the New Zealand beverage market is a non-alcoholic fruit cocktail concentrate which blends the “exotic flavours of African kola nuts with citrus essences and the tang of pure hop bitters.” Manufactured under licence in New Zealand by Beecham (N.Z.) Ltd, the beverage was released in grocery shops and liquor outlets throughout New Zealand last week.

At first glance the bottle could be mistaken for a popular brand of whisky. The drink has a pleasant taste and it would make an ideal “long drink” in summer. It is particularly suitable for the party-goer who does not drink, and Beecham’s recommends that Claytons should be poured over ice and mixed with ginger-ale, lemonade, tonic water, soda water, or Lemon and Paeroa.

Selling around $4 for a 750 ml bottle it is a little dearer than the average “kiddie cordial” but the South Island area manager for Beecham’s (Mr B. Suters) says that the price compared favourably with that of the same product in Australia. Claytons has been available in Australia for a long time but during the

last six months sales have climbed markedly, Mr Suter says.
