‘Separate portfolios'

PA Wellington Environmentalists have called on the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) to separate the portfolios of Environment and Lands and Forests, all held by Mr V. S. Young. In an open letter to Mr Muldoon, the Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand say the environment portfolio must be elevated from its “Cinderella” role and taken out of competition with the other portfolios. The letter, signed by E.C.O.’s chairman (Dr I. Prior) points to a motion from the organisation’s annual meeting earlier this month calling for separation because of incompatibility. Traditionally, the Lands and Forests portfolios were “exploitative ones,” based on quite different values from those prescribed by environmental limits, the letter said.
