Apology, settlement
PA Auckland The former Fijian Minister of Finance, Sir Charles Stinson, yesterday accepted an out-of-court settlement of a $1 million action for defamation. The action was brought after the “listener” published an article in March, 1977, headed “Fiji for Sale.” Sir Charles accepted an apology and an undisclosed sum in the Supreme Court at Auckland. His writ named Wilson and Horton, Ltd, printer, as first defendant, the Broadcasting Corporation as second defendant, and Vernon Wright, writer, as third defendant. Mr R. A. Adams-Smith, Q.C., and Mrs S. P. Bryers appeared for Sir Charles." Mr C. M. Nicholson, for the three defendants, read a statement to the Court on behalf of the Broadcasting Corporation and Mr Wright.
He said that Wilson and Horton was not associated with the apology because that company had merely printed the letter. Mr Nicholson said that the “Listener” had apologised and paid Sir Charles a sum which he accepted was adequate to compensate for his legal costs and expenses.
